The Wadsworth-Longfellow House, constructed between 1785 and 1786 by General Peleg Wadsworth, stands as the oldest brick building on Portland's peninsula. This historic residence was home to three generations of the Wadsworth and Longfellow families, including the renowned poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, who spent his formative years here. In 1901, Anne Longfellow Pierce, the poet's sister and the last family member to reside in the house, bequeathed it to the Maine Historical Society. By 1902, it opened its doors to the public as Maine's first house museum.
